In summation, I was not left feeling that Laurel was innocent or that she had been without other options to flee the temptor. We are admonished in the Bible to take the thought captive and not to develop vain imaginations. I was also left wondering Why, if she was innocent of the charges of an improper relationship with Fred, she did not try to defend herself more.Įveryone has thoughts that are impure and perhaps at one time or another misplaced affection. I was still left wondering if she would have gone away with Fred if he had in fact had no children and an easy plan had presented itself. However, Laurel's character was not developed in a way that made her fully believable. At least Laurel realizes that it is not good to continue on with Fred because he has a family. In the end, after she has a new family she tells Fred she is happy and he reveals he is taking his family away so Jane doesn't have to be continually reminded of his foolishness when she sees Laurel. Later she actually declares her love but admits the hopelessness of the situation to Fred. In the story the heroine entertains and promises to run away with Fred at first. The reader is simply not given enough evidence of her change in thinking or her anguish over the consequences of what transpired. The author wants us to see Laurel as grown in Christ and her maturity as a committed Christian. Laurel seems unrepentant of the harm to Jane until through her love for Morgan she finally sees that hurt Jane has experienced. She seems more inconvenienced and embarrased because she is found out, concerned that she has no where to go anyway and she is also able to see the effect on Fred's children. We are not given the idea that Laurel truly sees fully the grievous elements to the situation. Fred seemed very sure of Laurel's affections to act so boldly. She even would have permitted herself to be kissed by Fred if she had not been interrupted. There is evidence later in the story that things between them had progressed further than the author means us to believe when Laurel boldly declares her love to Fred without hesitation upon meeting him in town. It seemed unbelievable to me that Laurel could truly have been unaware that her "private" affections were known and returned by Fred. Jane reveals that Fred has declared his affection for Laurel. Laurel, 26, and old enough to recognize the warning signs, is apparently taken totally by surprise when Jane jealously destroys her prized possession and gift from Fred. We are led to believe it started innocently and developed slowly over 6 years time. Laurel, schoolteacher, has "innocently" or not so innocently flirted with the role of temptress to Fred, the husband of the family she boards with. Just because a book is in the Christian Romance genre does not mean the main character is always admirably free from the appearance of evil.
